Basics of poker and texas hold ’em

Disclaimer: This tutorial comes with no guarantee of being correct. Feedback about errors is welcome.

Poker is played using the standard english 52 cards deck, made up of 4 “suits”:

black:

– spades (♠)
– clubs (♣)

red:

– diamonds (♦)
– hearts (♥)

Each suit is made of 13 “ranks” (2 to 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace). The Ace can either be the lowest or the highest card.

An important element of the poker game is the “poker hand”, a combination of 5 cards. Two different hands can be equal valued, or one hand can be better than the other.
among 2 hands of the same “kind”, the better hand is the one with higher cards. The order of the cards is irrelevant.

The following possible hands exist, in descending order of value:

Straight Flush – all 5 cards are the same suit, and are in increasing order one after another (for example: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, all diamonds)
Four of a kind – 4 cards of the same rank (for example, 4 jacks)
Full House – 3 cards of the same rank, and 2 cards of the same, different, rank, for example: 4, 4, 4, K, K
Flush – all 5 cards of the same suit (for example, all hearts)
Straight – all 5 cards have incrementing ranks, but are not all of the same suit, for example: 8, 9, 10, J, Q
Three of a kind – 3 cards have the same rank, for example: 5, 5, 5, A, 8
Two Pair – 2 cards have the same rank, and another 2 cards have the same, different, rank, for example: Q, Q, 5, 5, 10
One Pair – 2 cards have the same rank, for example: A, A, J, 10, 4
High card – none of the above, the hand’s value is decided by the highest card.

The aim in poker is to maximize one’s own chips by betting according to one’s own (known) hand, and other’s (unknown) hands.

Each player has an amount of “chips” which are used to bet with.

poker gameplay (such as a tournament) is divided into “hands”, during which the players play with one hand – before each hand, players get dealt new cards.
(so, the term “hand” has 2 meanings). A player cannot see the cards of other players.

in Texas hold ’em, the most well known variant of poker, players only have 2 cards for themselves (called “hole cards”); up to 5 cards are shown on the table, and shared by all players, these are called the “community cards”. a player’s “hand” consists of the best possible hand (of 5 cards) to be made with his 2 hole cards, and the community cards combined.

for example Alice’s hole cards may be: J, 5. the community cards may be: 5, 5, 6, 7, 8. Alice has a three of a kind with fives. Bob has hole cards: 4, A, so he has a straight. In this case, Bob has the better hand.

A “hand” (as in, the timeframe in the game) is divided into betting rounds. During a betting round, each player, one after another, gets a turn to make a move.

The following betting rounds happen in each hand:

– pre-flop: no community cards are shown; players bet only according to their holecards
– flop: after the pre-flop has finished, 3 community cards are shown, and players bet accordingly
– turn: the 4th community card is shown, and players bet again
– river: the 5th community card is shown, and players bet again

If the hand is still going, then “showdown” happens: the holecards are shown, and the player with the best hand wins all chips bet in this hand.
the hand also ends if all players except one gave up earlier (“folded”), then the remaining player wins the chips.

While the betting round goes, each player has an “investment” into this round – the chips bet so far. in order to progress to the next betting round, all players must have an equal investment.

– fold: give up, lose one’s chips bet so far. can be done if one doesn’t think he can win the hand.

– call: bet so as to make one’s investment in the hand equal to that of the other players

– raise: increase one’s investment into the hand to be above that of others; now others have to match this again (by calling or raising), or fold.

THE MARRIAGE GAME

MARK BIONDI is looking for love (Female Slaves only).
Mark offers G$ 500 to buy his future wife off.

The idea is based on the “The Dating Game”, an old TV game.

Phase (1)  – CHOOSING CONTESTANTS

Slavers/Predators will show up at the event with slaves or prisoners to offer as  potential wives/husbands.
The main contestant will pick 10 slaves based on their liking.
However, if there are less than  10 candidates, s/he  will have to pick them all.
Max contestants: 10
ps: Main contestants may also hire bounty hunters to capture a few specific preys, if they wish.
ps: if you want to partecipate and you are not a slave, set yourself as ‘Prey’ and draw attention to you
before the event, so hopefully you will be captured and offered as slave to play the game.

Phase (2) – INTERVIEWING CANDIDATES

The main contestant will ask questions to the candidates,  without knowing  their identity, and will
gradually reject them one by one, and find out about their identity,  until a last one remains.

The player may ask any sort of questions – except anything that may reveal the player identity
or RL information.

(Sense of humor is a plus)

Time Limit: 1 hour.
After one hour, the main contestant is asked to rush into making a final decision.

Phase (3) – FINAL CHOICE

Once a final choice is made, the main contestant will pay the predator/slaver a preset amount of G$
as slave property transfer fee.

We are confident that you made the right choice and hope that you will live happily ever after.
But if not, either of you can break off the engagement.

This is all in-character, so please keep it light and fun and out of drama 🙂

Nomos 2

Take the Road south out of the city past the residential blocks and you eventually come to the suburbs.
But this is no suburbia of green fields and neat little communities, just a rocky outcrop that stands between the city and the dead dust bowl of the desert.
Passing through the sand wall on the city limits you cross the Burner Trench. This is where all the City waste and sewage spews out from the big sewage pipes that line the wall. Once fresh water fell into this trench after passing through the cities purification units, but they broke down long ago. Now raw sewage and even worse substances fill the trench and seep into the surrounding land.
Only dead trees and sparse brown grasses cling to life here on dusty rocky soil.
Ahead on the distant higher rocks stand the Villas of those who have made money from the city and still have financial reasons to stay on Earth.
But even these “wealthier” homes are dark and dusty places.
However, the poorer city dwellers still look on with envy at these symbols of seeming success in a hard world.
Close by them is the once much protested Overspill project, a small number of Porta-Homes supposed to alleviate overcrowding in the city.
This was back when the city was full to bursting, before the big migrations off world.
Now the project is home to Travellers and Nomads fresh out of the desert, with no place to stay in the city.
Following the road past the Project it twists and winds its way up a rocky outcrop called Mesa Diablo’s
The Devils Table. A line of smaller rocks make a ridge that runs from ground level to the highest point. It looks like the spine of a buried monster and so is called the devils backbone by the locals.
On the top of these rocks stands the old Bedlam Asylum. It was closed for years, then when the numbers of patients began to build up in the city, they re opened it. It was supposed to be getting a complete refurbishment, but that never seemed to happen. When it stood empty it gained a reputation as a place of ghosts and bad happenings, several suicides were reported there in the old wards. Not so much is heard about it now there are people there again.
Beneath the asylum on the road back into the city stand the Titty Twister  Rock club and bar, home to infamous Dark Angels Biker gang.
A little further along over the bridge heading north is the MetroGen  Refinery. Still in use but not managed and guarded as it once was.

Ladies, May 1, 2010 is Beltane or May Day.

This spring, when mating of all of God’s creatures and the renewal of earth is recognized.  Our ancestors used to revel in celebrations which were unashamedly sexual in nature.

With our hormones in high gear and the beginning of spring, what better time to have a War of the sexes in KoS.
